Dear Editor,
Recently, I read an article about a disgruntled waiter/server and thought it was a great share that could be applied to many aspects of life. Thus, being a teacher, I choose to apply my thoughts toward education and educating our students.
Tidbits of the article compelled me to reflect upon our very own Mission Statement: The mission of the Houston School District is to make student learning a priority…Our commitment to student excellence relies on the respectful and trusting relationships of our parents, teachers, and community.
When we remember that our students are priority, then professionalism and educational success will go hand-in-hand and fall right in line.
We should always take pride in the work that we do. We should always take pride in each other through encouragement & lifting/building each other up. Even if we don’t like the tasks ahead of us, we are always being given the chance to learn and ascend to greatness.
With all being said, the article resonated deeply: It’s not the job that’s so terrible, it’s the people. Any constant need to be simpering and flattering to “unsavory-ness” can take a toll on motivation. One example given in the article about waitressing/serving stated that listening “to people wealthier than you complain about things that are out of your hands for eight to ten hours a day is enough to give a person a permanent eye twitch…Especially when they stiff you on the tip.”
So, let’s make a difference in our daily relations with students, parents, community and colleagues by incorporating learning, leading and teaching into our priorities.
